Big Sur, California
The sparsely populated and thus romantically isolated aura of Big Sur makes it a
top spot for a romantic getaway vacation. Experience stunning ocean views,
awe-inspiring trees, and windswept vistas in this unspoiled region. You can hike
and mountain climb in one of nine state parks, or stroll along the scenic
beaches. Big Sur is also only a short drive away from the picturesque towns of
Monterey and Carmel. If you want to do the big splurge for your vacation, Post
Ranch Inn, perched above the Pacific, is the place to stay. The rooms and ocean
houses are luxurious and breathtakingly romantic. They come with king-sized
beds, wood-burning fireplaces, indoor spa tub, and private deck from which to
stargaze. For something a little more off the grid, but intimately romantic, try
Treebones, a bed-and-breakfast where you stay in wonderfully appointed yurts -
fabric-covered tents inspired by those used by nomads in Mongolia - and make
your own waffles for breakfast. The yurts have pine floors, cozy queen-sized
beds, portable heaters, and a clear sky dome through which you can see the
stars. Your yurt deck looks straight out at the Pacific blue. There is also a
pool and hot tub, and grassy knolls from which to sit and watch shooting stars
with your loved one.
Savannah, Georgia
It's one of the loveliest haunts in the South for a romantic getaway, honeymoon,
or anniversary trip. Organized around a grid of 21 squares, it's a very walkable
town, with streets shaded by live oaks and populated with stately mansions,
houses, shops and cafes. You and your significant other will be in the heart of
the South, so indulge in its gracious and gothic charms. Keep your sweetie close
by as you go on a walking ghost tour, or take a stroll through the squares and
shops and check out amazing antiques. Make sure you sample some classic soul
food like hoecake cornbread, fried chicken, and macaroni and cheese at The Lady
& Sons or laze away the day over a coffee and pastry at The Sentient Bean, a
sweet coffee shop and café, located at the south end of Forsyth Park, Savannah's
largest open space. Check into the Mansion on Forsyth Park, an exquisitely
restored Victorian mansion set in the historic district, complete with lavish
guest rooms and suites and a full-service spa. Savannah is rife with
bed-and-breakfasts - some of which are said to be haunted. The 17 Hundred 90 Inn
is Savannah's oldest inn and a regular stop on most of the city's ghost tours.
It's said that Anna Powers, a woman who fell in love with a married seaman in
the early 1800s, threw herself from the third floor balcony as his ship left her
sight. Since then, her ghost is believed to haunt the inn, especially room 204!
Bermuda
How does a romantic honeymoon amidst pink sand beaches and cerulean blue waters
on a subtropical island sound? Even if it's not your honeymoon, Bermuda is the
perfect place to go with a special someone on a romantic getaway. The sumptuous
natural scenery and the distinct blend of colonial history and African heritage
make this resort island a colorful place to visit - go to high tea or attend an
African dance recital. The Town of St. George is the oldest English-speaking
colonial town still in existence. Nearby Tobacco Bay beach is excellent for
snorkeling. Golf on spectacular, year-round golf courses with ocean vistas, or
just nap in a hammock. Stroll through town and check out the amazing pastel
churches, book a kayaking trip for two, sit under native Palmetto trees in the
Botanical Garden, or have a drink in a quaint piazza setting at the Blue Juice
Disco Bar. For a quieter romantic activity, be sure to go on a horse-drawn
carriage ride. If you and your special someone feel more active, a really
Bermudian way to get around is on a scooter or bicycle. They are ideal for
exploring the island's winding streets and stunning ocean views. All you need to
do is pack your swimsuit and passport. And prepare to go shopping - there is no
sales tax on the island!
Florida Keys, Florida
The laid-back atmosphere of the enchanting Florida Keys is the perfect backdrop
to a romantic getaway vacation. Key Largo, the gateway to the rest of the Keys,
is the self-proclaimed "Dive Capital of the World." The best place to go diving
with your partner is the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. You can take
scuba trips, snorkeling tours, as well as glass bottom tours to get a crystal
clear view of the reefs. After an active day, dine on some delectable dolphin
fish sandwiches at Calypso's or steak sandwiches at Mrs. Mac's Kitchen. Key
West, the small "last" island of the Keys, has a decidedly romantic air, with
its history of smugglers and pirates and literary cast of characters, including
Ernest Hemingway, Truman Capote, and Tennessee Williams. The storybook
architecture in natural surroundings captures the flavor of the Keys. Take a
trip on the Old Town Trolley and catch a narrated tour of Key West. Known for
its swinging gay population, Key West hosts several gay-only night clubs and
private bars. Whether you're gay or straight, you'll be sure to be blown away by
the Hurricane house special drink at Sloppy Joe's, a favorite hangout of
Hemingway's back in the day. |
